Cedar Falls Tigers, IHSAA State Wrestling Championship Wrap-Up

The Cedar Falls HS wrestling program wrapped up its season this past weekend at the IHSAA State Wrestling Championships. The Cedar Falls Tiger Wrestling Program took 4 qualifiers down to Des Moines and came away with 3 state place winners.  Senior, Jakey Penrith had 3 falls on the weekend, finishing his season and career with a 6th place finish @ 113 lbs. Jakey is also, one of few, 3X Tiger state place winners. Lincoln Willett @ 160 lbs was able to avenge a regional dual meet loss to a Fort Dodge opponent but fell just 1 match short of the podium in his sophomore season. Dakota Southworth finished his senior season with a huge redemption win over a district champion, Waverly opponent, on his way to a 8th place finish @ 170 lbs. Collin Bohnenkamp @ 220 lbs was also able to reach the podium with 2 falls on his way to an 8th place finish in his junior campaign.

The Tiger Program brings back 2 of the 4 state qualifiers and returns 9 of our 14 starters to the line-up in the 19-20 season. As hard as it is to lose our senior class; Jakey Penrith, Christian Simpson, Mason McCartan, Dakota Southworth, Jack Steffener,  Austin Schmidt, AJ Jackson, and Justin Campbell, the underclassman know it is next man up and are ready for the challenge as we work to improve on this year’s fantastic season!!

Cedar Falls Wrestlers Fall to #5 Fort Dodge in the 3A Regional Dual Qualifier

Its been a long time since the Cedar Falls Tiger Wrestling Program has had this opportunity. An opportunity to compete at the 3A Regional Dual Team Qualifier for the chance to go to Des Moines and wrestle in the IHSAA State Dual Team Championships but tonight we did.

Your Cedar Falls Tigers started off strong with a victory against a tough #19 LeMars 45-18. Next we squared off against returning State Dual Team Champions and current #5 Fort Dodge. Cedar Falls jumped out to a 24-6 lead with 2 falls coming from seniors Dakota Southworth @ 170 and Justin Campbell @ Hwt. As we came back to 106 we hit the heart of their line up with several ranked and returning wrestlers from last year’s championship team. We went on a bit of a skid, losing several tough, hard fought matches which allowed the Dodgers to take the lead. The next Tiger win came at 145, from another senior, Christian Simpson. The Cedar Falls Tiger Wrestlers fell to #5 Fort Dodge 40-27 bringing their dual team season to a close, finishing 13-8 on the year as a team. 7 of the 8 losses have been from teams heading to Des Moines this week for the State Dual Tournament in their respective class. I would say these guys have had a great dual season, but we are not done yet!!

The Tigers are @ Waverly Shell-Rock this Saturday, 2/9, for the IHSAA 3A Qualifier. This is the best time of the year, the time you work all season for and what you go out and take. Come on out this Saturday and see us work to get all 14 Tigers down to Des Moines!!
